Seamus Harahan Samurai January 19th - February 17th the third space is delighted to present two new video works by Seamus Harahan, Free Bird, 2006 and Samurai, 2006. These works continue Harahan's interest in actions and events that fall outside of narrative. Although not deliberately political Harahan's work is unavoidably contextualised by Northern Ireland's recent conflicts. Harahan records the city, not simply as a documentarist but as one transforming the lived environment into something foreign; describing his way of working as 'an absent minded gaze in response to the world... a benign voyeurism - ponderous and wondering - locating yourself, locating others.' Harahan often pairs his camera's shaky view with snatches of music, which seem to offer the chance of 'narrative', only to expose it as pure affect, the manipulation of emotion. Seamus Harahan work has been featured in exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery in London, the Czech Museum of Fine Art, Prague; Collective Gallery, Edinburg; the Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Viafarini, Milan; Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York, and Transmission Gallery in Glasgow.
