the third space is pleased to present a new series of large scale photographic works by Mary McIntyre. In this exhibition McIntyre continues to explore our relationship with nature, landscape and its historical and contemporary depiction in art. Her photographic practice is concerned with the traditions of European landscape painting, and the philosophies which informed it.

McIntyre’s work acknowledges that our ways of ‘seeing’ the landscape are conditioned through our knowledge of its historical depictions in painting and that both painting and photography not only portray but also construct ‘the landscape’.

McIntyre’s landscapes are not traditional rural idylls, instead she depicts vistas that are in themselves constructed and man-made, the gardens and parks of Ireland and Britain, places that have long been associated with the picturesque.

McIntyre’s work draws upon allegorical references to create layers of meaning. Her seasonal depictions of the landscape embody elemental forces such as life, death, growth and decay.
